The Chart Room

A procedural drafting engine that plots a complete 19th-century style nautical chart of an invented sea in the browser, layer by layer, from graticule and coastlines to soundings, place names, and cartouche.

About this project

As I continued to create Claude Code prototypes, I started to realize that Claude Code could create one-shot applications faster than I could come up with ideas. This was one of the "Chef's Choice" projects, where I gave Claude Code loose requirements (like making a static webpage) and otherwise gave it the creative freedom to make whatever it wanted.

This project was pretty neat, and not something I would have considered asking it to make. It makes me think that Claude prototypes may be a good source of ideas to pursue more seriously in the future.

A partly drawn chart of The Skifio Sea with coastlines and land washes inked but no soundings or names yet; the panel status reads Tracing Watercourses and a gantry cursor sits over the sheet. (view full size)
A new survey mid-draft, with the plotter still tracing rivers before soundings and lettering go on.
The same Kihel Sea chart re-inked as a cyanotype: white line-work, names and soundings on a deep Prussian blue sheet. (view full size)
The finished survey switched to the Cyanotype drafting mode.
